Healing fruits

tomato

As I was cleaning up a damaged tomato plant, I was thinking of how laden with fruits it was. We’re also expecting a fairly harsh winter if the wild berries out there are anything to go by.

Fruit is nature’s way of protecting itself. When a plant is damaged, it produces fruit shortly after, so that the whole cycle of fruit to seed to new plants can be started. That way, the plant’s cycle of life is continued. Plants out in the wild produce more fruit when the winter promises to be harsh, so that the wildlife can be fed in good time and new plants are guaranteed in case the winter kills off the mother plant.

When hard times loom or we’ve been damaged by life’s winds or breaking under the weight of our problems, producing fruit is a way of healing and a way of ensuring that, once the storms are over, the cycle of our own lives can continue. So write those poems, songs, books, blogs. Paint those canvases. Sketch your thoughts and visions. Do whatever you do to express yourself. It’s not an accident that most world-renowned artists produced their best works during times of strife or depression. Your creative ‘fruits’ are cathartic and healing too.

It may also be why people in the most wretched of conditions still have (too) many children.

That’s definitely one way of looking at it. I do believe that people in harsh circumstances often have children because the creation of those children is one of the few joys they have, but at a deeper instinctive, survival-of-man level, you’ve probably hit on a very valid point!
